The city is one of the most important in Sardinia thanks to the neighbouring airport of Fertilia. Alghero is also well known for the presence of world famous, precious red coral which is made into refined objects and jewlery by local craftsmen.
Alghero can also boast a notable natural heritage with large beaches of white sand, and cliffs reaching into the sea such as the promontory of Capo Caccia.
There is also a natural area with caves and tortuous paths, well known here is the "Grotte di Nettuno" which are accessible either by boat or by descending the 656 steps of the "Escala de Cabirol" (the steps of the deer).
On the inside of these caves there are wonderful staligmites and staligtites which form sculptures known as "organs". Near here is the area Porto Conte which is of primary naturalistic importance being rich in both flora and fauna. There is also of course a rich artistic patrimony with numerous monuments as well as the city walls which were expressly built for Ferdinando II of Aragon.
Alghero is also famous for its gastronomy, of which fish is obviously to the forefront, accompanied by excellent local wines. But Alghero is also a vivacious city which can offer visitors numerous types of entertainment, especially during the summer months when it is one of the most important destinations for visiting tourists.
